Dear Raleigh County Schools Parents and Guardians,
On Monday, April 8, 2024, it is anticipated between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM that our region will experience a partial solar eclipse. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon moves between the sun and Earth, blocking all or a portion of the sun’s rays.
Medical professionals advise it is always dangerous to look directly at the sun without appropriate eye protection. Out of an abundance of caution, Raleigh County Schools (RCS) will be taking extra steps for your child’s safety.
•RCS will follow a regular schedule on Monday, April 8, 2024.
•All schools have been encouraged to share the solar eclipse viewing experience with students by utilizing television feeds or internet live streams.
•Resources and lessons about the solar eclipse are available from the West Virginia Department of Education, NASA, and other science outlets.
•School staff will advise students of the dangers of looking directly at the sun at any time, especially during the solar eclipse.
•Students will not be permitted outside for any activities other than those planned and approved by the principal during the hours of 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. This includes recess, athletics, band or other outdoor after school activities.
•As students are dismissed, staff will be on hand to instruct students not to look directly at the sun and to monitor as they exit the building.
The eclipse may occur during dismissal time. RCS asks parents to reinforce the dangers of looking at the sun and to remind their children not to look directly at the sun on their way home from school on Monday, April 8, 2024.
We appreciate your understanding and support during this unique learning experience and ask that you talk with your children about the eclipse prior to school on Monday, April 8.

If your child will be attending a Preschool in Raleigh County next year join us on Friday, April 19, 2024, from 9:00 AM- 1:00 PM at the Raleigh County Convention Center.

Building Brighter Futures. Episode 3. Bus Safety. https://youtu.be/R6AB06a9u50
Buses 288 and 1174 will have no morning or evening runs today.
We are excited to begin school and want our students to arrive and depart safely.
The parent drop off line should not form until 8:05 to allow staff to park and get into the building. The front of the school is for staff parking only. All parent drop off and buses will use a single, one-way line going behind the building. Walkers with a parent will also walk around and enter the back of the school.
Everyone will use Adamos Street and follow the signs and instructions to continue around the building. G Street is exit only. Do not enter from G street. Please do not allow students to exit cars alone. Please remain in your car and pull forward as instructed. Students will exit cars from the passenger side only. When your child has exited safety to the sidewalk you may move forward and exit on G street.
Dismissal will begin at 3:20 and follow the same one-way, single lane for buses and parents. Please stay in your car and staff will bring your student to you. When your student is loaded from the passenger side only you may move forward and exit G Street.
For arrival and dismissal, please do not try to pass other cars or buses. Remain in the single lane until you exit through G Street.
At the beginning it may take extra time, but very soon it will be smooth and efficient.
Thank you in advance for your patience and grace.
